Abstract

The Srivijaya kingdom was a Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that flourished between the 7th and 11th centuries AD in Sumatra. Sriwijaya is not only known as a maritime kingdom, but is also known as a center for the spread of Buddhism and the teaching of Sanskrit. The peak of the glory of the Sriwijaya Kingdom began in the 8th to 9th centuries under the leadership of King Balaputradewa 850 AD. At that time, Sriwijaya had territory extending to Malaysia, Singapore and Southern Thailand. The aim of this research is to describe the history of the Srivijaya kingdom. What is the background to the success and downfall of the Srivijaya Kingdom? This research uses a qualitative method from a historical perspective. This research uses historical techniques. According to Nugroho Notosusanto, historical research techniques are divided into four stages, namely heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The findings of this research show that Sriwijaya's heyday was during the reign of Balaputradewa who extended his power to Malaya, Singapore and South Thailand. This kingdom collapsed due to various circumstances, including internal and external factors.
